Best Foundation & BB Creams for Melasma

Last week I put together a quick blog post featuring some of my favorite Melasma Coverup Tutorials. I got an email from a reader wondering “Which is the best foundation for Melasma” and this week I thought it might be a good idea to throw together a list of some of the best foundations & BB Creams for covering melasma spots (and the dreaded melasma mustache!) on your face. P.S. I also did a post on the best concealer for melasma too!

Best way to apply foundation over Melasma

If there is anything that I’ve learned from watching tons of YouTube makeup tutorials is that you never want to rub foundation or concealer over your melasma. Instead you should use your finger or a beauty sponge and lightly tap or dab the makeup over your melasma. That way the coverage stays on and doesn’t smear.

Some of the things you’ll want to look for when selecting a foundation to cover melasma:

  • Does it have an SPF? When possible, you’ll want to select a foundation that has a built in SPF for that additional protection for UV/UVB rays
  • Is it paraben free? Parabens have been known to mimic estrogen. Elevated estrogen levels have been known to cause melasma, so you’ll want to find one that is paraben free.
  • How long does it last? Because covering our melasma is a 24 hour job you’ll want to find a coverage that lasts all day.

Best Foundation for Melasma

Estee Lauder DoubleWear Foundation

By far, the most loved foundation by women with melasma is the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. Just scan any melasma forum and you’ll see women singing it’s praises. It provides a nice even full coverage that is natural looking and also has an SPF of 15.

Revlon Photo Ready Airbrush Foundation

If you are looking for a less expensive foundation, perhaps one you could find at the drugstore, then you might want to try ou the Revlon Photo Ready Airbrush foundation. This one comes with an SPF of 20 and is paraben free.

Kat V Don Foundation

Any foundation that comes from Kat Von D’s collection better be good because she is covered in tattoos! This foundation is well liked by women with melasma for it’s full coverage. The only thing to note about Kat Von D’s foundation is that it tends to be on the thicker side, so be prepared to use a beauty sponge to even it out.

Makeup Forever Foundation

Makeup Forever is well known for their High Definition foundation which makes this an awesome fix for covering up your dark melasma spots.

Best BB Creams for Melasma

If you are looking for full coverage but prefer BB & CC Creams you are in luck because there are several that melasma sufferers love and swear by! I’ve included some of the Amazon reviews as proof that these are the cream of the crop!

Jane Iredale Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream

Although the Jane Iredale seems to be priced on the higher side for a BB Cream it is well praised by women with melasma. The coverage is great and long lasting.

Supergoop CC Cream

Supergoop CC Cream is part of Gwenyth Paltrow’s beauty line and well liked due to it’s natural looking coverage and high SPF concentrate. A pro tip from users is to purchase two shades and mix them together to get your perfect shade.

it Cosmetics CC Cream

This one tops my personal favorite charts because it’s the one I use. I love the it Cosmetics CC Cream because it has full coverage but isn’t as thick as a full coverage foundation. But the best part is that it has a built in SPF 50, which makes this a great alternative to wearing both sunscreen and foundation.

Tarte BB Cream 12 Hour Primer

You cannot go wrong with a BB Cream that has an SPF of 30 & lasts 12 hours. The Tarte BB Cream is a nice average-priced cream that does the trick of covering your spots of hyperpigmentation.

Now that I’ve given you a list of some of the top foundations to cover melasma, I would LOVE to hear what your favorites are. Please leave a comment below!

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor :) I'm just a girl who suffers from melasma and I'm on a quest to find out as much information about the disorder as I can and hopefully rid myself of Melasma once and for all.

Thank you so much for your article! I just found out that I have this too… I was wondering what these dark spots are that I’ve been developing under my eyes! So now I’m on the quest for makeup with an SPF of 30 or more (as per the specialist I just saw) but also one that is oil free and won’t worsen my acne. It’s a tall order so I appreciate finding a list of some ideas to go through. xoxoxo

I use IT Cosmetics CC cream and it works! My melasma appeared after one morning playing tennis this summer. My sunscreen dripped off… I usually get it a bit of melasma each summer and then it fades in the fall. But this time it was a huge whopper! I think I will attribute the massive change this time to a change in hormones. I am frantic to find something to fade it now! I will try some of the mask ideas. Thanks for the tips.
