Rodan & Fields Reverse Made my Melasma Worse: Honest Review

Rodan & Fields for Melasma

Like many of you, I had spent many hours researching Melasma cures, treatment and creams. Time after time, I came across the Rodan & Fields Reverse product. The before and after pictures were certainly alluring and it seemed I couldn’t escape them…they were in my Instagram feed, my Pinterest feed and my Facebook feed. Shouting at me…saying, “Buy me, Buy me”.

Because Rodan & Fields has a high price tag, at first I resisted and tried many other things…but nothing was working..and I felt I had nothing to lose (except $200) that I finally broke down and ordered the Rodan & Fields Reverse regimen.

Above is a picture of me before using Rodan & Fields.

Now this regimen is pretty intense and requires 4 different products each day (and eventually 2x a day!).

  • Exfoliating Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Highlighting Cream A&B
  • Sunscreen

For the first week, you are supposed to do the regimen once a day in the morning and then as the weeks go on work your way up to do the entire regimen twice a day. Needless to say, I was very excited to get this going and hopefully see some results…after all…I had just spent $200.

At first..the exfoliating cleanser was fine, it didn’t irritate my skin at all. The toner tended to leave my skin pretty red, but I thought that was pretty normal. The highlighting creams were fine and the sunscreen smelled good, so each day I did this complete regimen before putting on my makeup.

However, when I got to the point of doing the regimen twice a day the exfoliating cleanser was really irritating to my skin and left it quite red. Looking back now, I believe this was the reason that my Melasma got worse…my skin was constantly being irritated from the products.

Flash forward 3 weeks and this was my skin. I was breaking out in several places…and I NEVER break out. Knock on wood, acne has not afflicted me in the way that Melasma has so I was very surprised to see myself with several pimples as a result of using R&F products.

But because I was committed to the process, I continued to use it twice a day for 2 months and unfortunately, it did not work…at all. And if I’m being completely honest I think it made it works because I now have spots on my cheeks that did not exist before I started Rodan & Fields. I was completely heartbroken to have wasted that much money and time in the hopes that it would go away.

So the moral of the story is don’t believe everyone’s before & after pictures!

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor :) I'm just a girl who suffers from melasma and I'm on a quest to find out as much information about the disorder as I can and hopefully rid myself of Melasma once and for all.

Hello Chrystie. I found your blog on instagram. So good that you have this blog to share your expirence! I did so many treatments and I’m always looking about new “tips” or searching for new miracles in a hope that my melasma could disappear.

    • Chrystie

I feel the same way as you Livia! 🙂 Thank you for your comment!

Hey! I’m from Colombia. .. Same problem here! **melasma**.
We use other products in my country… but the components are mainly the same.
Chrystie don’t worry about your melasma, you have awesome tattos!!! thanks for this blog

Jackie, have you tried Nerium? They just launched in Colombia. If you would like a free sample we could send you one.

I recently paid £500 for a mandelic peel. My skin was in great condition afterwards – but the melasma was still there. I am mixed race with dark olive skin so I was advised that mandelic peels are best. I was told 2-3 peels are needed. Has this worked for anyone. I’ve learned to live with my melasma – but the ‘tache, I wish I could fade it a little.

Hi, i’ve actually been doing mandelic peels since August and have seen a big difference with my melasma. I will continue to do these with hopes of it completely clearing up.

I’m so sorry it didn’t work for you. I used the reverse regimen combined with the accelerator pack after 30 days and the melasma that I have tried to get rid of for 5 years is now gone. My results were so incredible that the day I took my 60 day pic I immediately signed up to sell it. Guess I was lucky!!!

Btw they have a money back guarantee. You should return it

I’m there with you all! I am Colombian too (poster above) and have olive skin. They say we are more prone to melasma. I used to think I was blessed to tan so easily and nicely but now the blotches on my face and upper lip will darken if I am out 5 minutes. It is very frustrating and at the end of every summer, everything is darker and I am constantly looking in the mirror. I have been dealing with this for about 7 years. It just cropped up one day after waxing my upper lip and being out in the sun.
I spent about $150 on the Meladerm.. also a regimen with great reviews and natural ingredients. It did not make my melanoma worse but it did not help at all. The only thing that slightly lightens my spots is HQ and just being out of the sun (winter time is the lightest). Has anyone had an experience with Meladerm.
I am glad I read this post because like you, the RF products kept enticing me. I am also always tempted to try the Obagi regimen.

I had a similar experience with R&F’s Reverse Regimen. Once I started doing it twice a day, my skin was pretty irritated and I also had issues with itching (not just my face; I itched all over). I backed down to once a day, wanting to get through a couple months just to see if it worked. Fast forward and I have no results and my skin is breaking out. I think this product is just too hard on your skin.

Same exact thing happened when I tried Reverse from Rodan and Fields! My spots looked darker than they had ever looked before, and I was so distressed by this. I then had to use so many products to try to cover up the graying/brown spots and wore thick layer of foundation, but it still looked pretty bad. I sent it back to the company for a refund. Fortunately, it slowly started to improve back to pre-Reverse status, which wasn’t great but I was thankful it at least got back to that original state!

  9. Melissa

Sorry you had this reaction! I use Reverse once a day and Redefine once a day and have never had a problem, but everyone’s skin is different. At least we have a money back guarantee. I hope you took advantage of that! And we also have another Reverse regimen with hydroquinone as step 3. I hope you find a relief from your malasma soon! In any case, you’re beautiful! ?

  10. Mary

I started the reverse regimen and I experienced the same as you are saying. It got worse I stayed committed to the products and went through the purging stage which also happened at the 3/4 week period and honestly I can say my skin has never looked better. My melasma isn’t completely gone but it’s completely faded to the point you can hardly see it!! These products have changed my life. I noticed results around my 5th month and I am happy I never gave up!

  11. Fawn Volkert

While no product will work for 100% of people it’s fair to at least mention that Rodan and Fields offers a 60-day 100% money back guarantee and access to product assistance. My friend also got acne from the Reverse regemin and they advised her to remove one step. She’s never been happier with her results.

  12. lauren

This also happened to me! My melasma has never been worse. just looking for an affordable skin care line that actually helps!

  13. Becky Eagle

For people who read this. The REVERSE Brightening regimen pictured in this article is not designed to treat melasma. You need to use the REVERSE Lightening regimen. It has a different Step 2 and Step 3. And all products come with a 60 day money back gaurantee. Not to say that it works for everyone, but choosing the right products does make a difference!

    • CC

The Reverse product that you are speaking of contains hydroquinone. Are you not aware of the effects of HQ? It is, if anything, only a temporary fix for Melasma and cannot be used long term.

  14. Angela

Thank you for sharing your story! I too had the same results. Very disheartening. Have you tried anything else with a more positive result? I started Fraxel about 2 years ago and saw some improvement but that was hard on the wallet. I was hopeful this would be a great replacement but it is not. Still searching. Hopefully you have some other suggestions…
