The Mobile App Every Person with Melasma Should Download

Girl…if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know that I talk a lot about toxic and hormone disrupting ingredients on this site.  Hormone disruptors are found in many common products like facial cleansers, sunscreens,  shampoo, lotions, etc. People with Melasma should stay as FAR as away as possible from these ingredients as they can exacerbate our Melasma 🙁

Though there is no certain cause for Melasma, most medical professionals agree that Melasma occurs when there is a hormonal imbalance, and unfortunately for those of use with Melasma, a fluctuation in hormones can be caused by many things (most of which I try to cover on this blog!).

When we use products that contain hormone disruptors, we are causing chaos to our hormones which can make Melasma worse and the brown spots darker on your face. Nobody wants that, which is why I am excited to tell you about a new app that I recently found out about.

I wanted to introduce you to a super useful mobile app, called Think Dirty. The Think Dirty app is a free mobile app, available for both iPhone & Android, that allows you to scan the barcode of a product and see what ingredients are in the product and if they are deemed safe.

For example, I used the Think Dirty app to scan 3 of the sunscreens that I had in my bathroom. I use the Elta MD sunscreen almost exclusively because it’s tinted, and I fully expected this one to be the safest for my body considering…I do a lot of research on sunscreens. The rating scale on the app goes from 1 being the safest to 10 being the WORST for you. So you can imagine my surprise when I saw that it had a rating of 5 and the Aveeno Natural Protection Sunscreen had a rating of 2!

The Elta MD Sunscreen was given a rating of 5, which according to the app, “Product’s ingredients have potential moderate negative long-term health effects. The Aveeno which surprising rated a 2 does not contain any ingredients which have a documented potential negative health impact. The worst one of the 3 sunscreens was the Neutrogena Age Shield Face Sunblock, with a rating of 9 meaning, “Products ingredients have potentially serious negative long term health effects”

Once you scan an item, it will give you the rating as well as the list of ingredients and their rating of “Dirty, Half & Half or Clean”. As you can see with the Elta MD example above, the sunscreen contains 2 “Half & Half” ingredients deemed as unsafe. The questionable ingredients in this sunscreen are Phenoxyethanol & Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate.

The app also allows you to click on the ingredients and lists exactly why these ingredients are bad for you. As you can see the Phenoxyethanol is a common allergen and has the potential for skin irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea! Um…no thank you!

Ladies, I hope you find this app helpful. It was definitely an eye-opening experience for me as I went through my house and found all sorts of toxic products! You can learn more about the Think Dirty app here.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor :) I'm just a girl who suffers from melasma and I'm on a quest to find out as much information about the disorder as I can and hopefully rid myself of Melasma once and for all.
